Bacterial Survival in Snow Made From Wastewater

Snowmaking using sewage effluent is one of the methods approved by the Ministry of Environment for effluent disposal at Silver Star Mountain Resort. As you will see from this interesting report, there are many potenial public health risks associated with this method of effluent disposal.

Snowmaking has not been practiced to any great extent at Silver Star, mainly due to the expense involved. The process is very energy intensive, and the equipment is expensive. The resort has proposed using treated effluent for snowmaking near the bottom of Silver Woods chairlift, but currently has not implemented any snowmaking program.
