Bed Unit
Bed Unit is specifically defined in the All Seasons Resort Development Guidelines and generally means the accommodation required for one person to stay overnight, publicly available on a night by night basis and/or privately available on a permanent basis for second home and residential use. Typically, regardless if the bed units are public, private, or employee, the following number of bed units apply to the associated type of accommodation.
- Single Family Unit = 6 Bed Units
- Condominium = 4 bed units
- Hotel Room = 2 bed units
The formula for calculating how many bed units can be developed at a ski area is complicated, and is detailed in the All Season Resort Development Guidelines. To see how the calculation is made, click the icon below.
Editor's Note: As you can see from the numbers stated above, the actual number of beds at a ski area can be quite different from the number obtained using the official definition of bed units defined by housing unit type. Many Single family units at Silver Star Mountain can accommodate far more than six people.
According to Silver Star's 1994 Master Plan, buildout is projected at 7000 bed units on the mountain. Current estimates as of Fall 2008 are that there are approximately 4000-5000 bed units on the mountain. The resort is currently preparing a new Master Plan, which may call for up to 16,000 bed units on the mountain! It appears as if Silver Star Mountain Resort is well on its way to becoming another Big White.
The unfortunate reality is that the most relevant criteria for determining the optimum size of a ski area has been ignored; that being the ability of the surrounding ecosystem to accommodate the development without being damaged.
