Cross Country Ski Trail Map - 1988 - 1999
Local residents who have skied at Sovereign Lake for many years will remember when cross country skiing was free in the park. Trail fees were first introduced in the 1989-1990 ski season.
The development of the Silver Star Recreation Area (it was reclassified from Recreation Area to Class A status on March 21st, 1989) has been a cooperative effort involving the Ministry of Parks, the North Okanagan Cross Country Ski Club (now named the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club), the Recreation Council of B.C., and the Vernon Snowmobile Association. Click the icon below to view a map of the cross country ski trail system from 1988 - 1989.
You may want to right-click the map and rotate the view several times until it is oriented correctly. If you zoom in on the map, you'll notice that many of the trails we ski on today had not been developed yet. Some have been rerouted or renamed (Center Star was renamed to Lars Taylor Way).
At the time, the trail system at the resort consisted only of a few loops around the Knoll subdivision. The 1991 World Cup Trails were not cut yet, and nor were the trails up to Paradise Camp and Alder Point. The alpine ski lifts shown include the Summit Chair, Town (Village) Tee, Poma Lift, Mid Tee and Wee Tee (where Alpine Meadows subdivision is now), Hi Tee, Aberdeen (Blue) Chair and Vance Creek (Yellow) Chair. The ski resort had not yet installed the Vance Creek Express nor the Putnam Creek detachable quad chairlifts.
