B.C.'s Ministry of Tourism Ignores Master Plan and Awards Too Many Beds to Ski Resort
How big should the ski village at Silver Star be allowed to grow? When the Silver Star village area was first deleted from Silver Star Provincial Park in 1982, the ski resort and the Province stated that plans were for up to 3000 beds on the mountain. However, recent information suggest that the resort may have plans for almost 18,000 beds on Silver Star Mountain! Check out the 1981 article from the Vernon Daily News by clicking the icon below:
The number of beds allowable at any ski resort is tightly controlled by the Province, defined under a Master Development Agreement with the ski resort. As part of this Master Development Agreement, the resort must submit a Resort Master Plan (RMP) to the Ministry of Tourism for approval. As part of the RMP, the ski resort may also submit a Base Area Master Plan which delineates the planned development in the base area of the ski resort.
Before implementation of the RMP, the ski resort must submit the plans for approval by various levels of local government, and must also allow opportunities for the public to comment on the plan. Once final approvals are granted, the Resort Master Plan becomes the binding agreement that guides the phased development of the ski resort.
In theory, this seems like a sensible way to ensure the orderly development of a ski resort, with all stakeholders being consulted. In reality however..........
