Almost Half of Silver Star Mountain Resort's Nordic Trails Slated for Development into Condos and Hotels

The lands deleted from Silver Star Provincial Park for the 1991 World Cup cross country ski races are now slated for development into medium density residential housing. According to the latest Silver Star Official Community Plan, most of the nordic trails around the village, including the Bridal Path, Meadow Trail, World Cup, Heartbeat, Bella Vista, Silver Streak, Rollerblade, World Cup Shortcut and Connector, and Night Loop, will be eaten up by the massive real estate developments planned for the resort. When deletion of these lands was proposed by B.C. Parks in 1989 (they were finally deleted by an Order in Council in 1992), these lands were to be for recreational uses only. No mention was made that these lands would later be designated for fee-simple property development.

Currently, the resort's cross country ski trails are located on Crown Land (former Class A parkland), but if the resort is permitted to purchase these lands as planned for fee-simple real estate development, it would violate the terms of the Commercial Alpine Ski Policy (CASP) which strictly forbids the sale of lands associated with recreational infrastructure.
